Concrete Slab, Wall, and Subsurface Soils/Rock Sampling, Characterization, and Analysis at the Brennilis B901 Water Treatment Facility

TruPro® sampling & characterization acquired 280 powdered samples from 121 locations during 21 days, in a form requiring no sub sampling or sample preparation for alpha, beta, tritium, and gamma counting. Portable calibrated radiometric instruments used in the field included gamma spectrometry (ISOCS), Liquid Scintillation Counters (LSC) and the Gross alpha and Gross beta by the use of an ISOLO, a portable, alpha/beta counter.  Profiling at depth within and below the facility concrete matrix supported and enhanced EDF’s ability to evaluate and optioneer appropriate decommissioning strategy, packaging and shipment goals and to allow increased worker safety awareness.

NMNTI provided a clean and rapid new sampling and characterization approach for contamination of concern into the slabs, walls, subsurface concrete, through voids into subsurface rock, sands and soils.  Detailed sample incremental information was provided by NMNTI on the extent of clean and contaminated concrete by complementing existing surveys and historical information to determine where more sampling and characterization might be conducted on a day to day basis. A characterization protocol was established and provided a path forward to identify historical unknowns through the ability to sample inaccessible areas of the building matrix. The characterization technology and approach proved that NMNTI has the capability to impact positively on EDF Decommissioning strategy and resources on a highly visible and environmentally delicate project .
